The Deer is the main antagonist of 99 Nights in the Forest — a huge, bipedal deer-like monster that hunts players at night. It's the creature responsible for kidnapping the four missing children, and the cultists worship it. Here's everything you need to survive it.

The Deer can't be killed

Weapons are useless against the Deer. It takes no damage from any source, so don't waste bullets or arrows. Your only options are escape and stun.

How to escape the Deer

  1. Flashlight stun — shining a flashlight at the Deer briefly stuns it. This is your main escape tool. Note: it recovers faster each time you stun it, so don't rely on it forever.
  2. Run for the campfire — the Deer will not enter the campfire's safe zone while the fire is lit. If it's chasing you and you reach the fire, it gets stunned and runs away.
  3. Break line of sight — the Deer's pathfinding is basic. Put large trees or buildings between you and it to gain distance.
  4. Get high — wolves (and the Deer) can't climb. Some of the best safe spots are listed below.

The Deer gets hungry

Some nights the game warns you: "The Deer is hungry tonight." A hungry Deer is faster, deals more damage, and has glowing blood-red eyes. When you see that warning, get back to camp before nightfall — if you're deep in the forest, you may not make it back in time.

The Deer also becomes hungry if your campfire goes out at night.

Best hiding spots

The community has found several spots where you're safe from both the Deer and spawned wolves:

  • Halfway up the ladder to a Water Tower, Treehouse, or Tool Workshop
  • Inside the Caverns
  • The empty crate in a Barn
  • Wedged behind the two crates against the wall in the Dilapidated Building
  • Standing on the radar's steel-beam "X" in the Cultist Base
  • On top of a building (Watchtower, ruined Chapel) — position on a corner so wolves drop to the ground when they spawn

Was the Deer ever friendly?

Briefly, yes. In past events the Deer could become an ally:

  • "The Deer is Hurt" update (Nov 2025) — you could heal the injured Deer (2 bandages + food), help it take revenge on The Bat, and it would then defend you during two cultist raids.
  • Thanksgiving update — cooking all 10 dishes triggered a cutscene after which the Deer stopped attacking and defended you from raids.

These events have ended; the Deer attacks again.

Quick facts

  • The Deer only appears at night, and only hunts players outside the campfire.
  • It's one of five monster entities: the Deer, the Ram, the Owl, the Bat, and the Cat.
  • On Day 1 the Deer is completely harmless — use that time to scavenge.
  • Its damage scales with the day count; late-game it can one-shot you.
