Is 99 Nights in the Forest based on a true story?

Partially, yes. The developers have said the game is based on a true story and a few myths, with some details changed or omitted.

The real event: on May 1, 2023, a small plane crashed in the Amazon jungle in Colombia. Four children survived and lived for 40 days in the jungle before being rescued — largely thanks to the survival knowledge of the oldest child.

In the game, that story becomes the backdrop for the four missing children you have to rescue across 99 nights in a hostile forest.

The origin: true story + cryptid myths

The game's monster, the Deer, is a fusion of two cryptids:

• The Wendigo — a predatory creature with a deer-like head and a man-like body.
• The Not Deer — a creature that looks like a deer but behaves wrong: standing on two legs, showing intelligence, and not fearing humans.

The community's main theory about the Deer's origin: it is not a mutated deer. An unnamed human was transformed into the Deer in an unknown lab by scientists — who then became the cultists the Deer forced to worship it. The Deer then kidnapped the four children and hid them in locked caves guarded by wolves and bears.
